Cut from rocks three billion years old, the Callanish stones likely stood before the Great Pyramid was finished. Humans had already settled here 5,000 years ago, farming, hunting, fishing—and building. Outer stones rise about 11 feet, the central stone more than 15 feet. Like Stonehenge far to the south, the 40-foot circle was an important ritual center visible for miles around.
